Hartalika Teej Puja Vidhi (process)

Celebrate Love and Tradition: Hartalika Puja 2024 Guide

Hartalika Puja is an ancient vrat (fast) puja which is performed by women. They pray for a good husband and a good life.

Legends associated with Hartalika pooja

The legend Hartalika is associated with this vrat, which is the reason for its popularity. The word Hartalika is the combination of two words, ‘Harat’ and ‘Aalika’. ‘Hara’t means “kidnap” and ‘Aalika’ means “female friend”.  Hartalika Teej was the friend of the goddess Maa Parvati. The Father of Maa Parvati wanted that Parvati should get married to lord Vishnu, but Parvati was against it. So, Hartalika took her in the thick Forest. When Parvati’s father found that Parvati was missing he thought someone had abducted his daughter. For this reason, this day started to be known as Hartalika. The other name is Haritalika.

When Parvati was alone in the forest, she made extreme efforts to please lord Shiva whom she loved a lot. Due to her great efforts and determination, lord Shiva was pleased and blessed her that her wish would be fulfilled. Goddess Parvati wanted to get married to Lord Shiva that was her wish. Lord Shiva fulfilled her wish. In this way, Hartalika helped Parvati to get her desired husband the lord Shiva. This day is also observed as the unity of friends.

When is Hartalika Puja in 2024

Hartalika Teej will occur on Wednesday, 07th August 2024. Next year means 2025; it will be celebrated on Tuesday, 26th August 2025 and we will celebrate Teej in 2026 on Monday, 14th September 2026. Women performed the Hartalika Teej fast during the Shukla Paksha Tritiya (third fortnight) of Bhadrapada Maas. On this auspicious day, people make idols of Maa Parvati and Lord Shiva with the Mitti (sand). Women used to worship this idol to get a blissful marital life and progeny.

Hartalika Puja Vidhi (process)

Hartalika Teej is a three-day festival that is observed by females to honour the Maa Parvati. On this day, women perform fast for their husband’s long life and prosperity. Unmarried girls keep fast to get good husbands.  This three-day festival is celebrated with full enthusiasm and honesty. Devotees who observe fast never take a single drop of water on this day and this shows the importance of this puja.

The shubh (good or auspicious) time to perform the puja is the morning time. Pradosh time is also considered a good time if someone is not able to perform hartalika puja in the morning time. Women first take baths to make their bodies as well as soul pure. They get dressed up in colourful dresses specially red and green. The idol of Maa Parvati is dressed in bright-coloured clothes and then puja gets started. The idol of Maa and lord Shiva is accompanied by wild animals like camel, and elephant. These small idols of animals are an attractive part of the puja. Generally, this Hartalika festival is popular in the Marvadi area. Ladies sing traditional songs and dance with their friends and enjoy the monsoon beginning. In puja, various seasonal fruits are involved to make prasad like apples, bananas, guava, mausmi (sweet lemon), sapodilla and many more. Women offer flowers, sweets and fruits to Maa in this puja. They hear Teej Katha (story) from old and honoured ladies or pandit in the puja method. Whoever listens to this katha is expected to concentrate on their soul mate. Then at night, they fulfil their fast.
