Ram Navami is a sacred occasion that marks the birth anniversary of Lord Rama, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It falls on the ninth day of the bright fortnight in the Chaitra month, typically occurring in April. Ram Navami Pooja is a time for profound reverence and devotion, with a special focus on Lord Hanuman, who unwaveringly served Lord Rama. This celebration honours Lord Rama's earthly incarnation in Ayodhya, a response to the earth's plea for deliverance from the formidable demon king, Ravana. During this auspicious time, temples are adorned, and idols of Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, Lord Laxman, and Lord Hanuman are adorned with new garments and adorned with vibrant flowers.
Performing Ram Navami Pooja: A Spiritual Journey
While there are no strict rules for performing Ram Navami Puja, many devotees choose to observe a full-day fast on this special day. The fast typically consists of Satvik food without salt, although some may even undertake a Nirjal Fast, which entails fasting without water. The Pooja begins by rising early in the morning and taking a purifying bath. A mandap is set up on the northern side of the house, and a vedi (a ceremonial platform) is created in the centre. Idols of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita are placed on the vedi, and mantras are recited. Offerings of lamps, rice, incense sticks, fragrant flowers, and scents are made. Following this, a lamp with either one wick or five wicks is lit with ghee, and an aarti (ritual offering of light) is performed.
