Janmashtami 2024: The Advent of Govinda
Janmashtami is one of the most awaited festivals in India. The day of Janmashtami is believed it bring much festivity and colour with it because the mischievous lord Krishna arrives on this day. The day of Janmashtami is celebrated as lord Krishna takes incarnation on earth as a human being. The words enchanter and Krishna are synonyms of each other. Lord Krishna is the only god who is very naughty and he is also having various names. Lord Krishna is also known as Govinda or Kanha.

The word Janmashtami is made from the amalgamation of two terms Janma and Ashtami. The term Janma means birth and Ashtami means the eighth day of the month. Lord Krishna gave birth to Ashtami. We already discussed that lord Krishna was born on Ashtami of the Hindu lunar calendar. The Hindu lunar calendar has two parts Shukla Paksh and Krishna Paksh. Lord Krishna was born on the Ashtami of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight). Janmashtami is celebrated in Bhadrapada month. It is celebrated because lord Krishna took birth on this day also known as Krishna Janmashtami.
When we think about Kanha his ocular image draws in our mind- a holy being with a beautiful flute across his mouth and a peacock quill around his head. The most arresting feature of Kanha is his ability to keep the bridge between spirituality and mischievousness.
A grand celebration is arranged on Janmashtami and people used to sing devotional songs in honour of lord Krishna. Legends of Janmashtami: Krishna Janmashtami 2024
The myth dates back to the period when the king of Mathura was Kansa. In the kingdom of Kansa people are treated with cruelty and at that time life satisfaction becomes very difficult. An oracle is given to Kansa that the eighth-born child of his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudeva will kill him. This oracle provoked him and his begin to kill the Childs of Devki and Vasudeva. Whereas Kansa already killed the first six Childs, the seventh child Balrama was born. This seventh child of Vasudeva got transferred from Devaki’s womb to Rohini’s womb which saved the destiny of the child. Rohini was the second wife of Vasudeva.
On Asthami of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month their eighth child lord Krishna born. Vasudeva and Devaki were in immense fear as their eighth child was also killed by Kansa; Vasudeva took an anxious step to save the life of their eighth child Krishna. He decided to send Krishna to Gokul to Nand his friend.

He put small boy Krishna in a basket and put it on his head to cross the Yamuna River that comes on the way to Gokul from Mathura. Since the river was stormy and this created difficulty in this way, Sheshnag covered and protected baby Krishna below his fangs and aided the couple to cross the stormy river.
Yashoda and Nand were brought up by lord Krishna. When lord Krishna grew up he killed Kansa and freed mankind from his fright and terror.
Lord Vishnu takes the eighth Avtar as lord Krishna. This day is celebrated with joy and happiness as lord Vishnu incarnated as lord Krishna.

Celebrating Krishna Janmashtami
This day of Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated in vibrant patterns. Of all the patterns, there are some which can be tinted the most. Let’s have a look at how Krishnashtami will be celebrated in the year 2024.
Janmashtami in Dwarka
Ordinarily, Janmashtami is celebrated in divine form at Dwarka and it will be in 2024. In Dwarka, this festival takes a pious mood. On Sri Krishna Janmashtami devotees worship lord Krishna in Dwarkadhish temple it is the centre of attraction at Dwarka Nagri. For almost a century lord Krishna resided at Dwarka. After his decease, it got inundated by the sea. The supreme architect named Vishwakarma built the city of Dwarka in just two days with numerous places in it.
Precious ornaments are used to decorate the idols of the deity. Mangla arti is performed in the morning for lord Krishna. Bhoga and food items made of milk or milk products are offered to lord Krishna after Mangla arti.
After this Sri Krishna gets dressed up and the curtains are rolled up so, everyone can do Darshan. After, a few hours curtains rolled down again for Bhog and Shringar. The curtains will again roll up at night at 10:30 when Sri Krishna gets to sleep.
The celebration of Gokulashtami or Krishna Janmashtami gets immersed into happiness after midnight. The entire monument gets keen with the phrase “Nand Ghar Anand Bhaio Jay Kanhaiya Lal ki”, as people welcome Sri Krishna.
The celebration continues for two hours from 12 midnight to 2:30 pm then the Dwarkadhish Mandir closes at 2:30. The Same celebrations and rituals will be performed on Sri Krishna Janmashtami in 2023.
The ceremony of Dahi Handi is more popular on the west sides like in Mumbai (Maharashtra). Devotees used to organize big events of Dahi Handi at different places on Janmashtami or Krishnashtami.
Dahi Handi
The ritual of Dahi Handi (clay Pot full of curd) is very popular in Maharashtra and especially in Mumbai. This ritual is performed on Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami. On the day of Janmashtami a clay pot known as Handi filled with curd, yoghurt and butter tied on height. Then its practitioners form a pyramid on the ground to the height of Dahi Handi and aim to reach Handi to break it.
The persons who are involved in this ceremony to break Dahi Handi are called Govinda Pathak. The one who stands at the top most of the pyramid breaks the clay pot with coconut and all the material contained in it falls and gets spread down on the entire group.
Govinda Pathaks and other audience continuously chant cheer “Govinda Ala Re” in loud voice during the complete performance of Dahi Handi. During this festival, the Janmashtami and Dahi Handi ceremony on every street of Mumbai has great fervour and it is celebrated with extreme devotion. Dahi Handi competitions are also held in Maharashtra and the group that breaks the number of Handis gets praise. This ritual will again be performed on Gokulashtami or Krishna Janmashtami in 2024 and brings keenness among the devotees of Mumbai.

- After chanting Mantra, perform Arti of lord Krishna with incense sticks, camphor and light lamps (Diya) with Ghee wick.
- Then again Chant Santana Gopala Mantra on the beads of Tulsi Mala. At least one mala Jaap should be chanted after completing all the rituals.
- Now, pray to Sri Krishna and tell him about your wish for the Child. If you perform all the rituals with great faith in him he will surely fulfil your wish. These remedies are not magic only your faith in Lord Krishna can create magic in it and your desire for a healthy child will be fulfilled soon.
