Legends of Janmashtami: Krishna Janmashtami 2024

The myth dates back to the period when the king of Mathura was Kansa. In the kingdom of Kansa people are treated with cruelty and at that time life satisfaction becomes very difficult. An oracle is given to Kansa that the eighth-born child of his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudeva will kill him. This oracle provoked him and his begin to kill the Childs of Devki and Vasudeva.  Whereas Kansa already killed the first six Childs, the seventh child Balrama was born. This seventh child of Vasudeva got transferred from Devaki’s womb to Rohini’s womb which saved the destiny of the child. Rohini was the second wife of Vasudeva.

On Asthami of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month their eighth child lord Krishna born. Celebrating Krishna Janmashtami

This day of Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated in vibrant patterns. Of all the patterns, there are some which can be tinted the most. Let’s have a look at how Krishnashtami will be celebrated in the year 2024.

Janmashtami in Dwarka

Ordinarily, Janmashtami is celebrated in divine form at Dwarka and it will be in 2024. In Dwarka, this festival takes a pious mood. On Sri Krishna Janmashtami devotees worship lord Krishna in Dwarkadhish temple it is the centre of attraction at Dwarka Nagri. For almost a century lord Krishna resided at Dwarka. After his decease, it got inundated by the sea. The supreme architect named Vishwakarma built the city of Dwarka in just two days with numerous places in it.

Precious ornaments are used to decorate the idols of the deity. Mangla arti is performed in the morning for lord Krishna. Bhoga and food items made of milk or milk products are offered to lord Krishna after Mangla arti.

After this Sri Krishna gets dressed up and the curtains are rolled up so, everyone can do Darshan. After, a few hours curtains rolled down again for Bhog and Shringar. The curtains will again roll up at night at 10:30 when Sri Krishna gets to sleep.

The celebration of Gokulashtami or Krishna Janmashtami gets immersed into happiness after midnight. The entire monument gets keen with the phrase “Nand  Ghar Anand Bhaio Jay Kanhaiya Lal ki”, as people welcome Sri Krishna.

The celebration continues for two hours from 12 midnight to 2:30 pm then the Dwarkadhish Mandir closes at 2:30. The Same celebrations and rituals will be performed on Sri Krishna Janmashtami in 2023.

The ceremony of Dahi Handi is more popular on the west sides like in Mumbai (Maharashtra). Devotees used to organize big events of Dahi Handi at different places on Janmashtami or Krishnashtami.

Dahi Handi

The ritual of Dahi Handi (clay Pot full of curd) is very popular in Maharashtra and especially in Mumbai. This ritual is performed on Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami. On the day of Janmashtami a clay pot known as Handi filled with curd, yoghurt and butter tied on height. Then its practitioners form a pyramid on the ground to the height of Dahi Handi and aim to reach Handi to break it.

The persons who are involved in this ceremony to break Dahi Handi are called Govinda Pathak. The one who stands at the top most of the pyramid breaks the clay pot with coconut and all the material contained in it falls and gets spread down on the entire group.

Govinda Pathaks and other audience continuously chant cheer “Govinda Ala Re” in loud voice during the complete performance of Dahi Handi. During this festival, the Janmashtami and Dahi Handi ceremony on every street of Mumbai has great fervour and it is celebrated with extreme devotion. Dahi Handi competitions are also held in Maharashtra and the group that breaks the number of Handis gets praise. This ritual will again be performed on Gokulashtami or Krishna Janmashtami in 2024 and brings keenness among the devotees of Mumbai.

We know that Sri Krishna is spiritual as well as mischievous in nature exactly the same as this Dwarkadish temple shows the spiritual side of God Krishna and the Dahi Handi ritual tinted his mischievous nature. The same Dwarka city festival of Janmashtami or Gokulashtami is also celebrated in Mathura with great severity.

In the year 2024, it will be the 5251st birthday celebration of Lord Krishna. Let’s have a look at Gokulashtami or Krishna Janmashtami 2024, to add more joy and piousness to this day.
