Story of Goddess Lakshmi and Daughter of Moneylender
Once upon a time, there lived a moneylender in a small village. Every day his daughter used to offer water to a Peepal tree. Goddess Lakshmi resides on that tree. Once, when the girl was offering water Goddess Lakshmi asked the girl to become her friend. The girl replied she would ask her father. When she told her father about the incident, he gave her permission. On the second day, the girl agreed to the friendship.
Both Mata Lakshmi and the girl become good friends. One day Goddess brought the girl to her home and she was welcomed wholeheartedly by the Goddess. Different kinds of meals were offered to girls.
When the girl was leaving the house, Goddess Lakshmi asked her ‘When will you invite me to your house’. The girl immediately invited her to the house and headed for her home. However, she was unhappy due to the financial conditions of her house. She was afraid that she wouldn’t be able to welcome Goddess Lakshproperlyner.
The moneylender saw her daughter upset and understood the reason for her sadness. He asked her to clean the house and make a seat of mud. Light the lamp with four wicks and worship Goddess Lakshmi. At the same time, an eagle dropped the queen’s necklace near the girl. The girl sold the necklace and arranged the other commodities and food to welcome the Goddess.
After some time, Goddess arrived at her house along with Lord Ganesha. The girl served both of them nicely. Pleased by the service, Mata Lakshmi made the moneylender a rich person.
Lakshmi Pujan Story
Once there lived a king. One day he went hunting and lost his way back to his palace. A woodcutter helped the king to get back to his palace. Pleased by the services of woodcutter King offered him a complete forest of sandalwood trees. But, woodcutters did not know the value of sandalwood. He used to cut the trees and burn them to prepare food.
King came to know about it through his spies. He understood that only an intelligent person can make use of money. This is the reason, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha along with Mata Saraswati are worshipped together. As it brings, wealth and wisdom in a person's life.
Return of Lord Ram in Ayodhya
According to the religious scriptures, Lord Rama returned after 14 years of exile by killing Ravan, king of Lanka. The people of Ayodhya welcomed him and expressed their happiness by lighting lamps. With the rejoicing of the return of Lord Rama, the city of Ayodhya was filled with the light of numerous lamps.
As per legend, Lord Krishna killed a demon named Narkasur on the day of Diwali. Lord Krishna saved the earth from the terror of Narkasur.
Story of King and Saint
Once, a sage wished to have the comforts and luxury similar to kind. He started meditating on the Goddess Lakshmi. Please with his worship, Goddess blessed him with his wish. After getting the boon, the saint reached the court of the king and threw the king’s crown.
King saw a poisonous snake coming out of the crown. King felt happy that the saint saved his life. One day, the saint asked all the courtiers to run out of the palace and then the palace fell to shambles. King again praised him and sage felt proud.
One day sage removed the idol of Lord Ganesha from a classroom. The next day, he asked the king to remove his Dhoti as the snake entered it. King immediately followed orders but there was no snake found in the dhoti. King became furious and ordered his army to get Saint imprisoned. Saint again started worshipping Goddess Lakshmi and she came into her dream and said, ‘You removed the idol of Lord Ganesha, who is God of wisdom from the classroom. He is angry with you and took away your wisdom’.
Realising the mistake saint worshipped Lord Ganesha. God was pleased and he removed the anger of the king. This way saint got his position back in the king’s court.
Hence, it is said that wisdom is very important for wealth. Therefore, wisdom, knowledge and wealth are together worshipped on Diwali.
Story of Indra and Bali
Once, scared by the Indra, Bali went far away and hid himself. Indra in search of Bali reached an empty house. Bali was hiding there in the form of a donkey. Both of them were talking. Suddenly, a lady came out of the body of Bali. Devi said she was Goddess Lakshmi and asked Indra, why was he following her.
She said that she never remains constant. But, she stays at the place where there is truth, religion, courage, donations, fast and sympathy. She resides in the house of an honest person, and is patient, does the welfare of Brahmans, observes the dignity of religion, performs religious rituals, wakes up every day before sunrise and sleeps on time, and helps the poor, destitute, helpless, orphans and old aged. A person who follows the order of his master, and treats his friends with love and care. The person who does not have bad qualities like laziness, bitterness, dissatisfaction, lust and lack of wisdom.
Hence, it is clear that Goddess Lakshmi resides basically in a place where all these qualities are present.
