Diwali is a festival of lightening, fun and prosperity. Diwali has another name Deepawali means “a row or bulk of lightening diyas”. In Hinduism, it means success over darkness. This festival is celebrated by almost every Indian. They celebrate it in different manners in different parts of the country. At the time of this festival, people usually clean their houses, open the windows and decorate their houses in order to welcome the Goddess of wealth, Mata Lakshmi. During the celebration of this festival, many things are connected like diyas, candles and fireworks. In the celebration, people use crackers for enjoyment and give blessings to each other by offering sweets. Most of the people give gifts to their relatives, friends and neighbours for blessings. Great memories are made with the loved ones during the celebration. In the corporate world, the company head gives bonuses or gift hampers in the form of Diwali gifts.


Importance of Diwali

There is an interesting story behind the festival of Diwali. More than a thousand years back, there was Lord Rama, the king of Ayodhya who came back after a victory over the Asura king Ravana. To mark the occasion of his victory, this festival is celebrated. This festival is usually celebrated by all people but is the biggest festival for Hindus. This comes on the fifteenth day of Kartika. It is a festival of five days. The first day is Dhanteras, which is for Lord Lakshmi. The second day is Narak Chaturdasi, which is for the Goddess Kali. The third day is for celebration means lightening diyas and candles, giving sweets and gifts, and bursting the crackers. The fourth day is for the Goverdhan puja. The last fifth day is for BhaiDooj. Each and every day has some importance and is celebrated by people in their respective traditions. Many Indians who are living outside India also celebrate this in a very graceful manner.

Diwali 2023 will shine its light on November 12th.

In 2024, Diwali will occur on 01st November.

In 2025, it will be celebrated on 20th October.


Diwali Decorations

There are many ways to decorate your house for Diwali. Many decorative items are there. Among a number of things, there are traditions that are made only for Diwali purposes and others we can use by our own choice. In traditional things, there is a string of mango leaves or Ashoka leaves which are hung by the people on the top of the door of the entrance and at the puja room. Rangoli is made on the floor at the entrance of every room. Beautiful wall hangings are used having images of lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi. Some lightening is also used on the roof of the house to remove the darkness and it looks very beautiful.


How to perform Diwali puja?

People place statues of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi in their temple, especially on chowki. Some people observe fast on this day. A puja thali is prepared to worship Ganesha and Lakshmi devi. Puja starts with the Ganesh puja, and flowers, fruit as well and sweets are offered to God. Then Lakshmi puja starts. Under this, first of all lotus flower is offered to devi and then shringar is offered like chunri, sindoor, bangles etc. After this, fruits and sweets are offered to Lakshmi Devi. Then aarti thaal is prepared which includes paan ka patta and kapoor for lightning flame.
